A Newbie Exploring Community Farmers Markets

Exploring the local farmers markets by a newcomer.

“Newbie” or “noob” are described as slang terms for newcomer or novice. That’s me – I have recently relocated to Gold River from Santa Rosa, California. It really is exciting to look forward to exploring my new community. But where do I start? Living in Sonoma County was all about the food and wine. That really suited me and gave me great pleasure for the last ten years – so my plan is to explore my new neighborhood, to uncover the local products and what will reveal itself that makes this area special.

My first venture was to look up farmers markets on the internet and found out we had one right down Sunrise Boulevard close to the light rail station on Saturday mornings. By the way, what is NOT located on Sunrise? The market was extensive, with great looking produce and good prices. There were lots of choices with my special find being the best Asian pear I have ever had. This fruit always surprises me.The owner/rancher from Placerville would not tell me its name as it was top secret – he had grafted the tree 10 years earlier and this is his top producing fruit. It was juicy, great flesh and I returned later to purchase some more. The market is certified as a genuine location for farmer’s to bring their products directly to the consumer and there are some booths that are organic.

To my surprise there was a second market located in the opposite direction at the Sunrise Mall. This proved to be just as exciting, with not only great produce, but also some very fine products that have been developed by local entrepreneurs using harvested goods from the area. As I walked around I tried a very fine feta, some scrumptious jams and took home some freshly made pasta. I am in “hog heaven."

A mid-week market will be very welcomed and so convenient in the Fair Oaks Village. I was raised on a farm and really enjoy conversing with the growers who have taken such care with their goods. We are very lucky to have such access to fresh quality items. My plan is to learn about these new digs with my favorite hobby – FOOD!

Not sure where it will take me, but I am very excited for the adventure.
