Community Corner

Day of Peace 2013

Saturday, September 21, 2013 from 10am-3pm Carmichael Park at 5750 Grant Ave, in Carmichael, will join with other people around the world in celebrating the UN’s International Day of Peace. The day is a free family event and will be filled with live music, free yoga, Zumba, food, vendors and nonprofits sharing what they are doing to make the world a better place. There will be One Minute of Silence at noon along with all time zones across the planet as requested by Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the United Nations. The local UN Young Professionals will come and give a one minute blessing along with other local community leaders throughout the event. Also teaming with the Global March for Peace, we will have our one of a kind Shoe Labyrinth, created by Sue Anne Foster PhD, where people will walk the Contemplative Path of Peace, blessing the shoes onto the next part of their journey before being donated to those in need.

Our 3rd Annual Day of Peace event held at this park, offers a wide variety of dance and movement celebrating all cultures with free Yoga, Zumba, Universal Dance of Peace, One Billion Rising’s Break the Chain flashmob, Kirtan with Aaron Pappas and Melissa Ann Scharlach, West African Drumming and dance with Tyehimba along with bluegrass band JamAGang, and R&B Mercy Me! Band. The music and performers will be fundraising for 1LOVE/Playing for Change.

Acknowledging that lasting peace begins within, Dr Katherine Bisharat’s nonprofit, Inspired Medicine has created a grassroots effort, educating the community with the foundation of a HealthyBody, QuietMind, PeacefulHeart which inspires people to ‘Be   the Change’. Other nonprofits attending include Sacramento/Bethlehem Sister Cities, PEECEKeepers, Off The Mat, VHHFA, Tuskegee Airmen, Ubuntu, Bread of Life, Sol Collective, NOW, and Women’s Wisdom Art.

People can bring clothes and shoes to donate the day of the event at the park, or beforehand to Mirth To Earth at 5931 Stanley Ave, Ste 6 Carmichael, CA 95608 or Inspired Medicine in Ste 8. After the event, the clothes and shoes will be recycled through California Clothing Recyclers. This event is hosted by Joan Marie of Mirth To Earth and Carmichael Recreation and Park District.
