Weekend Adventures: American River Rafting Season Ends Sunday

Visit Apple Hill, get lost in a corn maze, get your exercise on and more.

Though fall has officially started, temperatures in the Sacramento region are expected to reach the high 90s this weekend. Summer seems to want to stay a bit longer, so here's a listing of fun adventures to enjoy before the seasons actually change:

Get Wet: The American River is still warm enough for swimming or wading, and it's a cheap way to relax and spend time away from home. And the last day of rafting season is Sunday, so if you've ever wanted to, now's the time!

Go Pick: The crowds don't usually reach Apple Hill until October, so now is the perfect time to enjoy the fruity, festive fall attraction. Taste some wine and beer, get the kids excited for the changing seasons (there's a litany of kid-friendly activities) and indulge in some homemade pie.

Get Lost: Dixon's 53-acre Cool Patch corn maze claims to be the world's largest, and also includes pumpkins for sale, a scarecrow contest and a teepee village. If you go in the evening, be sure to bring a flashlight so you can read the map.

Go Fresh: With the Davis Farmers Market consistently offering a variety of produce and freshly-made goods, this Saturday morning activity will leave your taste buds satisfied.

Get Your Fit On: For Elk Grovians with a competitive side, the first qualifying event for the "Fittest of Elk Grove" athletic competition is this weekend. It's the event's third year, and categories include men, women and team.

Get Stuffed: At least 20 food trucks will unite for Trucktoberfest Saturday at West Sacramento's River Walk Park. Enjoy gourmet snacks, craft beers and live entertainment by the river from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

I, too, miss the history quiz of a mystery location. Please bring it back.

I am curious as to why it is vacant and fenced off.

*gasp!!* Tacky chain link fence? There go the property values! Chain link fence aroundRead More vacant/undeveloped land is usually an indicator of some County ordinance to secure the land for public safety. I'd buy the land and for the pure entertainment factor put mock working oil pump jacks on the land. Just to see what people do. :-p

Thanks for the kind words Josh and for doing a good job of taking over Carmichael among other PatchRead More towns. I'll always remember promoting Patch around the area and the weird looks we/you got out at the multi-chamber mixer. Best of luck in Alaska and say hi to the eskimos for me.
