Weekend Planner July 8–10: Movie in the Park and More

Here's what's happening in and around Carmichael this weekend.

Now that the fireworks are behind us, you may feel a little letdown, which is understandable. Anticipation is half the fun when it comes to special events. 

We write them down on our calendars or enter them into our phones, depending on our generation. Here are some festive activities taking place in town which will get you in party mode again.  

Have you ever wanted to watch a film outdoors on a big screen? The folks at have organized just that and all are encouraged to attend—free rated-PG fun for everyone!

Those of you who love Halloween can get into the spirit of things a bit early, thanks to 's ballroom dance, where you can don bright makeup, feathers and sequins and release your inner dancer during this Friday afternoon session.

Live music, an art reception and women's workshop round out this weekend's to-do list, so go ahead and save the dates with a few keypad entries or a good old-fashioned pencil—here's to looking forward to all the good stuff to come!

1. Ballroom Dance

Where/When: , Friday 1:15 p.m. to 3:45 p.m.

Why Go: If you loved Paul Mercurio and Tara Morice in Strictly Ballroom, it's time to strut your stuff and do some of your own steps on the dance floor to the accompaniment of a live band. They've even got coffee and refreshments when you need a pick-up in between numbers. Great exercise and nice people await; flashy costume optional.

Pricing: $5 per person at the door.

Where/When: O'Donnell Heritage Park, Rappahannock Way and Charleston Drive, Friday 9:30 p.m.

Why Go:  Pack up the lawn chairs and blankets, and head on out with family and friends to see Kung Fu Panda, a computer-animated comedy featuring the voices of Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie and many additional stars—what a perfect way to spend a summer night! That's not all:  Enjoy popcorn and shaved ice on the house, provided by .

Where/When: , Saturday 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Why Go: Calling all ladies d'un certain âge: If you are perimenopausal or have already reached menopause, you're invited to come to this special class, which covers the topics of "how to maintain your ideal weight, how to adapt to a raw food diet, food combining for better digestion," and more. Please register at 916-910-4914; no walk-ins accepted.

Pricing: $5 per person.

4.  Second Saturday Reception

Where/When: , Saturday 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Why Go: Art aficionados are invited to this lovely reception, complete with entertainment, where you'll partake in refreshments, view the work of local artists from Northern California Arts's Inner Views Annual Membership Show and more.  Pop in the gift shop on the way out for a one-of-a-kind souvenir for yourself or a friend—the arts have it!

Pricing: Free to attend; art prices and gift shop prices vary.

5. Concert in the Park Series:  Todd Morgan and the Emblems

Where/When: (Danny Bishop Memorial Pavilion for the Performing Arts), Sunday 6:30 p.m.

Why Go: Does '50s rock make you wanna shake your tail feather?  More into the '30s jazz greats like Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller and Art Tatum? You've got both genres this evening, all in one performance, so stop by and dance to the music. Bring along some pizza, fruit and Martinelli's Sparkling Cider and tuck in for the night—don't forget the blanket!
