Carmichael Man to Serve 8 Years in Fatal Hit & Run

Paul Pellandini was killed in the 2012 hit and run.

A Carmichael man was sentenced to 7 years in prison for reportedly leaving the scene after he hit two pedestrians, killing one, in Carmichael last year.

Steven Hernandez pled to all charges of two counts of felony hit and run and misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter last month and will also serve one year county jail, according to the Sacramento County District Attorney's office.

"In March 2012, Hernandez swerved onto the shoulder of the road on Winding Way, killing Paul Pellandini and seriously injuring Bill Collins," according to the DA's office.

Pellandini and Collins, friends, were chatting outside Collins' home on Winding Way near Garfield Avenue when a vehicle hit them and left without stopping.

The driver, 39-year-old Hernandez, reached down to pick up his cell phone — that's when his car veered and he struck the two men, according to the Sacramento Bee.

Hernandez fled and was later arrested in a reportedly stolen car in July, the Bee reports.

Hernandez received the total maximum sentence. He was also charged with vehicle theft in a separate case, and had two prison priors, according to the DA's office.
