Former Carmichael Couple Takes up Weight Loss Business

Dudley and Sherry Adair work as weight loss coaches for Take Shape for Life.

This is right around the time of the year when Dudley Adair's side business starts to get busy.

The Carmichael native and his wife, who moved from Carmichael to Lincoln about four years ago, are weight loss coaches with Take Shape for Life, a company whose "coaches" sell meal replacements and provide weight loss plans and advice.

"We talk to people starting now with the holiday season upon us," Adair said. "People seem more willing to listen at this time of the year than any other."

Adair said he and his wife in 2008 both lost about 35 pounds with the program, which puts clients on five meal replacements and one home-made meal per day, all totaling about 1,000 calories. He said they've both kept their weight off.

"It's really simple for most of our clients," he said. "They find it much more simple than they would imagine. You're really not hungry."

Adair also said Take Shape for Life is a more effective weight loss program than many other diet plans on the market, and also includes coaching and advice.

"What we've found is a large number of our clients have tried the ones that are more famous," he said, mentioning Jenny Craig and Nutrisystem plans. He said Take Shape for Life allows its clients to lose weight faster than those programs. He also said that although the program costs $300 a month, that's less expensive per pound lost than many alternatives.

He said what's kept him and his wife involved with the program is the gratifying feeling of seeing other people lose weight. He recalled a woman who lost 50 pounds on the program.

"We saw her at an awards banquet about six months after she started, and she looks so good in her new black cocktail dress that my wife broke into tears," Adair said, adding that the woman's husband said she looked as good as the day they were married. "Stories like that are worth more than money."

Adair, whose parents bought a home on Jan Drive in Carmichael in 1961 and who attended , said he and his wife regretted leaving the area for Lincoln.

"If we had to do it over again we'd probably still be there, to be honest with you," he said, adding that he and his wife missed their large Carmichael backyard. He also has fond memories as a kid of walking to school and playing whiffle ball in an empty field that has since been developed into more houses.

"It's a great place to live and a fantastic series of neighborhoods, no doubt about it."
