Moth Hole: Preserving Fashion for More Than 30 Years

Moth Hole is one of the oldest consignment stores in Sacramento, offering a boutique-like shopping experience for a reasonable price.

Consignment stores can be great places to shop for designer items at a reasonable price. For one Fair Oaks consignment store, keeping up with the current fashion trends while responding to the economic pressures has just been a part of the day-to-day business for more than 30 years.

Moth Hole has established itself as one of the oldest consignment stores in Sacramento. Located at 11787 Fair Oaks Blvd., this store is a local hot spot among others in the neighborhood.

Before Moth Hole relocated from its Orangevale home, the previous owner sold furniture along with women’s clothing and accessories. When the store relocated to Fair Oaks in July 2000, Rose Erickson purchased the store and focused primarily on selling women’s clothing and giving her customers a welcoming shopping experience.

Moth Hole has a large selection of women’s clothing and accessories, including a $5 rack outside. The shopping experience is enhanced with the refreshments offered to every customer.

Rose has given Moth Hole the pizazz to attract a wide range of customers, "from 18-70 years old," she claims.

The store is split into two large rooms, with many items that catch the eye; a jean wall selection, color-coded blouses and appealing outfit pairings on display throughout the store for the unimaginative shopper like myself.

The store is big on giving back to the Fair Oaks community; they support their local Bella Vista High School and donate monthly to various charities.

“We give monthly to the Sacramento Food Bank,” Erickson said. “We give them bags and bags of clothing.”

Rose turned into an avid shopper when she began purchasing clothing for her store. She enjoys seeing new items enter daily. Their selection of designer handbags might be their pricey items, but if you ask Rose she will tell you about some ‘To Die For’ Chanel handbags and jewelry that have come through her store.

Liz Hensler is a local shopper who enjoys designer clothing at a bargain price and speaks highly of Moth Hole.

“They have the best vintage selection,” Hensler exclaimed. “I always find brand name stuff at a reasonable price.”

If you are a shopper and enjoy searching for those treasured finds, Moth Hole holds special holiday events and private parties for friends to have the whole store to shop.

Not all of their items are gently-worn recycled clothing, a majority of their inventory is new and one of a kind.

“We are not just relying on consignment; we have more new items. I buy a lot of manufacture samples and sell those,” Erickson said. “I really like sample lines, because they are one of a kind.”

Diane Templeton, vice president of Fair Oaks Chamber of Commerce, shops at Moth Hole 2-3 times a month.

“Their staff is wonderful, the clothes are so current and the prices are great,” said Templeton.

The shopping selection is different daily and that’s what makes it exciting to shop at Moth Hole. It’s a boutique-like shopping experience, but without the inflated price.

Moth Hole is open daily, Monday-Friday 11 a.m. - 7 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Sunday noon - 5 p.m.
