The FDA added some pretty serious warnings to statin drugs today, which are very widely used medications for lowering cholesterol, and include simvastatin, Lipitor, Crestor and Zocor.

According to a study conducted by International Medical Services last year, more than 20 million people in the United States were taking these medications, which have now been linked to increased blood sugar levels, and in at least one study increased the onset of Diabetes by 9 percent. Statin drugs have been shown to help heart disease, and lower cholesterol, but at what cost? The memory impairment seen in people on statins was reversed when they stopped taking the drug, which is a very good thing considering the increasing rates of Alzheimer's and other senile dementias.

On the bright side, cholesterol and blood sugar can largely both be controlled by means other than drugs. There are natural substances that don't have side effects to lower cholesterol and blood sugar in addition to dietary and lifestyle changes.

You may have heard that Cheerios cereal can lower cholesterol. The reason for that is that it contains fiber, which helps you excrete bile, a form of cholesterol. Cheerios is a pretty poor source of fiber, so if you add in healthy fiber found in fruits and vegetables, you will lower your cholesterol, and your need for higher doses of medications.
