Labor Day weekend is here, the unofficial end of the summer. Here are some events in the Carmichael area and beyond.
1. It's week 1 of the high school football season with all five Carmichael-area schools in action. looks to rebound from last week's loss to Enterprise of Redding with a matchup at 8:30 p.m. tonight against Rancho Cotate of Rohnert Park. The game will be played at Grant High School. is also looking to bounce back from a loss last week as the Eagles host their home opener at 7:30 p.m. against Union Mine of El Dorado. opens its season at 7:30 p.m. of Citrus Heights. That game is at San Juan High School. And in a rivalry that is known as "The Battle of American River Drive," and begin their seasons in a game at 1 p.m. Saturday on Jesuit's field.
2. In other high school sports, 's varsity boys soccer team hosts Center of Antelope today at 4 p.m. The Eagles are 3-0 so far this season under after a 3-0 win against Burbank on Wednesday. Jesuit's water polo team is on the road to play in a two-day tournament in Clovis. 's girls volleyball team hosts Sacramento Waldorf of Fair Oaks at 5 p.m. Check back next week for an article on the Matadors.

3. Friends of the is hosting a huge sale on adult and child books and movies from , so come by and stock up on both for just a few bucks.
4. Be Greek for a day at the Sacramento Greek Festival, which runs through Sunday at the Sacramento Convention Center. Admission is free until 3 p.m. today and then $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and free for children 12 and under.

5. If you're heading to Lake Tahoe for the weekend, why not head just east of Reno into Sparks, Nev. for the annual Nugget Rib Cook-off, which runs through Monday?
