Man Drowns at Lake Natoma

A 19-year-old man drowned Friday evening after attempting to swim across a channel at Lake Natoma, according to Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District.

Guillermo Contreras was swimming with a friend near the Aquatics Center at Lake Natoma when he went missing around 8pm. Crews arrived to find another man who was frantic, tired and exhausted, and said that the two were crossing the channel when he lost sight of Contreras.

Divers from the Drowning Accident Rescue Team were called out and began a subsurface search of the area with a side-scanning sonar.

The search continued until approximately 1am when rescuers found Contreras. An investigation into what may have caused his drowning is ongoing.
