Week in Review, June 18: Athlete Spotlights, County Layoffs, Water Rescue

A look back at the week ending June 18.

Residents in and around Fair Oaks suddenly find themselves in the throes of a full-fledged summer season. School is out, the rafts are on the water and nightlife has many outdoors, enjoying all the area has to offer. With that in mind, it’s easy to miss out on what has been making headlines in the area. We can’t blame you, either. Enjoy the beautiful weather and when you get a chance, come back kick back and catch up on the goings on making news in the area.

  1. – Resident columnist, Dante Geoffrey raises some interesting points about how advertising in public schools could be financially beneficial.
  2. – Former Bella Vista pitcher Justin Haley is making a name for himself at California State University, Fresno.
  3. – The $42 million project will add new and widened lanes to Hazel Avenue as well as a renovated bike trail path.
  4. – Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department will have to cut $4.3 million to get to a budget of $327.8 million, a figure $26 million less than it requested.
  5. – Bella Vista seniors Tommy Lininger and Dustin Vaught both made the Sacramento Bee’s All-Metro team.
  6. – The San Juan Unified School District Board of Education passed a plan that will redistrict enrollment boundaries for elementary, middle and high schools.
  7. – Two years ago Sacramento County’s park ranger staff had 25 members patrolling areas in and around the American River Parkway. Today there are 11.
  8. – Brad Hudson takes the reigns as Sacramento County’s new CEO.
  9. – A $6.9 million budget cut has led to the elimination of 42 employees within the District Attorney office, including 31 prosecutors.
  10. – Sacramento Metro Fire Department’s water rescue team gears up for a summer along an American River that is running at more than 11,000 cubic feet per second. That’s up more than 10,000 CFS from last summer.
