New Star Children's Theatre is proudly presenting "Curtain Up" this weekend at Fair Oaks Community Clubhouse, 7997 California Ave, Fair Oaks!  This show, written by New Star Alumni Melanie Thompson, features many talented youngsters as well as teens and adults!
A very special young actress, Natalie Roeschen, is playing "Lizzie" the spoiled daughter of an overzealous Stage Mom "Donna"(Think "Dance Moms") played by Rochelle Schafer, who is in her 28th New Star production, at the age of 18.  Natalie, who is 8 years old is acting in her 23rd show with New Star!  Her first show with New Star was when she was 3 1/2 years old, and she was the "Mayor of the Munchkins" in "The Wizard of Oz".  At her audition she was adorable in her pretty tutu styled skirt, singing a song from "Annie" in full voice in front of the directing staff.  No one could believe that this little girl sang the way she did at such a young age!  After she was cast as "The Mayor of the Munchkins" (a role with several lines, which she memorized right away), she also covered other roles as many of the cast members became sick that year with the terrible flu that was going around.  Natalie was a consumate actress, a pro, even at 3!  No one had to worry about whether a munchkin was missing because Natalie could say any of their lines at the drop of a hat!  She blew the audience away with her performance and of course her "adorable" face!
During her time with New Star, Natalie has formed friendships with kids of all ages that will last her a lifetime.  Some of her special relationships are with the older kids who have grown up with her and seen her grow up to a ripe old age of 8.  One of those girls is Rochelle Schafer, who plays her mom in "Curtain Up".  Rochelle has known Natalie since her first show, and has developed a love and respect for the young actress.  Natalie, in turn, looks up to Rochelle as a mentor and big sister and role model both in acting and in being a friend.
To help Natalie prepare for her role as Lizzie, Rochelle thought it would be fun for the two of them to go on a girls date. She arranged for them dress up as their characters, Donna and Lizzie, and have pictures taken. During the outing Rochelle gave Natalie advice on how to bring personality and life to her character and encouraged her to let go and be a little silly. It's one thing to have your mom give you advice, but when an 18-year-old that you've looked up to for years takes time out of her day to make you feel special and give you advice, that's a BIG DEAL!!
After the pictures, the girls finished their outing with dinner and ice cream. It was truly something that Natalie will remember for many years. It meant a lot to her to get advice from a "pro" and have a special afternoon with someone she admires so much.
Rochelle who loves Natalie very much says "She's a very talented, bright, funny, and sweet little girl who is wise beyond her years. Natalie is one of the greatest young people I know.".
New Star is not just a theatre company for kids.  It's a place to build friendships and a family.  New Star kids remain friends for their whole life.  They look back on their times at New Star as some of the best parts of their childhood and teenage years.  New Star is proud of the atmosphere they have created for their cast members.
In addition to Natalie and Rochelle, the Curtain Up cast is filled with equally talented young children, teens and adults and its a GREAT family show!  Even the writer of the show, Melanie Thompson, will be arriving from Vancouver tomorrow, so she can actually play "The Writer" in the show this weekend!
