Dinner and a Moive: 'Trouble with the Curve' is a Softball Right Down the Middle

Clint Eastwood takes a break from his one-man act with an empty chair to play a grouchy old man. Now that's a stretch!

Dinner: Thought you were going to a sports movie? Feel a little cheated? Make up for it with a little sports action at any one of your favorite local sports bars. On this occassion, we're recommending Palm Street Bar & Grill. The food is a cut above the standard sports bar faire, plus the mood is lively enough to keep good conversation going throughout the meal. Plus, there are plenty of big screen TVs around to keep you interested.

Showtimes: To catch a showing of Trouble With the Curve one only needs to take a quick drive over to the Century 16 Greenback Lane at 6233 Garfield Ave. The movie is showing at the following times: 11:05 a.m., 12:25 p.m., 1:45 p.m., 3:05 p.m., 4:25 p.m., 5:45 p.m., 7:05 p.m., 8:25 p.m. and 9:45 p.m.

Review: Clint Eastwood plays an aging baseball scout who has a troubling relationship with his daughter, Amy Adams, in 'Trouble with the Curve.'

Eastwood's eyesight is failing, so Adams decides to tag along on what could be his last scouting trip. The conflicts in the movie are many: father vs. daughter, daughter vs. her new boyfriend (played by Justin Timberlake), and a big baseball conflict pitting younger, tech-savvy scouts against old-school, seasoned scouts. We have seen this movie before; it was called 'Moneyball.'

There are some dark moments, some sappy moments, and you are never quite sure if you are supposed to laugh or not when Eastwood goes on one of his grouchy old man rants.

The last time he was in a movie was Grand Torino, back in 2008, and it's been nearly twenty years since he has been in a movie that he has not directed. He should stick to his own stuff.

The movie is heartwarming but it takes a long time to get there. The Timberlake-Adams chemistry was never there and the baseball scouting scenes did seem to drag…so the flick-o-meter gives 'Trouble with the Curve' a three out of five.

In the end, it is one of those easy-going old-time movies that studios don’t seem to make anymore. I've always been a fan of Eastwood and, even though he continues to play the grumpy old guy, he pulls it off to a certain extent.

I, too, miss the history quiz of a mystery location. Please bring it back.

I am curious as to why it is vacant and fenced off.

*gasp!!* Tacky chain link fence? There go the property values! Chain link fence aroundRead More vacant/undeveloped land is usually an indicator of some County ordinance to secure the land for public safety. I'd buy the land and for the pure entertainment factor put mock working oil pump jacks on the land. Just to see what people do. :-p

Thanks for the kind words Josh and for doing a good job of taking over Carmichael among other PatchRead More towns. I'll always remember promoting Patch around the area and the weird looks we/you got out at the multi-chamber mixer. Best of luck in Alaska and say hi to the eskimos for me.
