Apply What You Learn!

Local business coach, Pete Schroeder, offers Business Nuggets to motivate and inspire.

How many of us have gone to classes, read books filled with tips, learned how to do something, how to solve problems, how to change our lifestyle so we can lose weight, or gain weight, or improve in a sport (tennis or golf, anyone?), or grow our business, or deal with obstacles, and then revert back to our old habits? What kind of person would do that? I know there are 1,000s of folks whose shelves are filled with how-to books – self help, business keys for success, healthy choices, etc. – yet, even though they were read and “digested,” the message came in one ear and went out the other. Is it stubbornness? Is it lack of trust? Is it self-sabotage? Is it instant gratification? Is it laziness? What is it?

This is such an important, perplexing question because it is so rife among adults. It could very well be the primary distinction between the successful and the striving. The successful learn and apply it; the striving learns and discards it. Ultimately, this “syndrome” is stifling. And it is reminiscent of the behavior of a child. We know better. So, how do we shift into who we have to be to actually apply what we have learned?

By choice. And practice. We just simply do it. One day at a time. Maybe one hour at a time, or one area at a time. We fight the impulse. We choose to apply it. We see ourselves as an intelligent person who knows what it takes. We alter our self-perception. And we fake it till we make it.
