When several Fair Oaks residents began hearing "horrendous screaming and squealing" coming from a nearby backyard, they took a closer look to see what was happening.
What they found was a large hog being slaughtered, initially with a hammer-blow to the head that failed to kill the animal, according to the Sacramento Sheriff's Department.
"If you've got a problem, call the *** cops," said the neighbors doing the slaughtering, as you can hear in the News10 report above.
That's precisely what the neighbors did.
"It looks like at first he tried to bludgeon it with some kind of blunt force," said Jason Ramos of the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department to News10. "When that was unsuccessful, he took some type of weapon and slit the pig's throat."
News10 also reports that Christopher Roppelt, 31, was arrested and charged with felony cruelty to animals.
"Anyone who argues that vegetables and animals share the same experience before they end up on your plate is ... ignorant ... Animals, obviously, feel pain and fear just like humans do (who are also animals). A carrot, obviously, does not. I guess on carrot factory farms, they also rip out their carrot testicles without anesthesia and cut off their carrot tails while they kick and scream with their little carrot legs and little carrot lungs. I guess when mother carrots being kept in carrot gestation crates develop open sores the size of a human fist and have their carrot uteruses prolapse and fall out of their carrot vaginas, they also go cruelly untreated as sows do. I guess when factory farmed carrots are shot in the head with a bolt gun and strung up by their hind leg to have their throat slit open while they're still conscious and starting kicking and thrashing violently, that's just the same as when it happens to pigs. I guess the next time your neighbors hear carrot screams coming from your backyard they better call the cops ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THIODWTqx5E&feature=youtube_gdata_player"
