Dozing Driver Intercepted at Intersection

The following information was supplied by the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Around 1:25 a.m. on Sept. 4 a woman was observed sitting in her vehicle on the roadway at the limit line of a signal controlled left turn lane. According to a Sacramento County Sheriff's Department deputy report, the Fair Oaks Blvd and San Juan Ave. signal light cycled twice and the suspect, later identified as Shannon Shirey, 41, did not move her vehicle.

According to the report, Shirey was contacted in her vehicle and found to be unconscious with her foot on the brake pedal and the vehicle in drive. The contacting officer shifted the vehicle into park and tried to awaken Shirey. When Shirey finally awoke, she was asked to step out of her vehicle and a search of the driver’s area was conducted.

Shirey's identification was located in a small black bag along with a glass narcotic smoking pipe and a clear plastic bag containing a white crystalline substance-- methamphetamine. Shirey was placed under arrest and booked at the main jail.
