Fire Extinguished in Legal Marijuana Grow House in Carmichael

The fire was reported Friday around 6:40 a.m.

Local firefighters spent their morning Friday extinguishing an attic fire in a Carmichael home.

The home, on Mayer Way near Walnut Avenue, was reported on fire around 6:40 a.m., Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District Capt. Kim Fong said.

"Crews responded to find a working attic fire," Fong said.

He said crews were able to make short work of the blaze, limiting it to about $20,000 in damage to the home. No injuries were reported.

"During salvage and overhaul they found this home to be a marijuana grow house," Fong said. "Proper paperwork for the number of plants was produced."

He said as far as fire crews could tell, about 10 to 12 plants were being legally grown at the house.

Fong said the official cause of the fire is unclear, but investigators are leaning toward it having been caused by an overloaded electrical circuit.

He said fire officials remind residents to always have electrical work done by a licensed electrician.
