Suspect in Fair Oaks Standoff is Dead

Sheriff's deputies shot at man barricaded in a home on Vir Mar Street. The cause of death is still unclear.

A man who barricaded himself in a Fair Oaks house Thursday afternoon has died after being shot at by Sacramento County sheriff's deputies.

Sheriff's department spokesperson Jason Ramos declined to name the man, but a neighbor identified the home's occupant as Mike Berger, owner of a local tree trimming business.

Shots rang out at about 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the house in the 4800 block of Vir Mar Street, where police say an armed man wanted for a felony had refused to surrender to them.

"Get down on the ground!" deputies could be heard saying from outside the house around 4:30 p.m., followed by "Suspect is down," and "He had a shotgun."

Ramos said he couldn't confirm whether the suspect's death was caused by deputies' fire or was self-inflicted.
