Suspected Car Thief Arrested After Nearly Causing Accident in Front of Officers

Alex Joseph Swanson was arrested around 3 a.m. Monday.

A suspected car thief was arrested Monday in Carmichael after he nearly crashed in front of deputies, according to a Sacramento County Sheriff's Department crime log.

The suspect, 21-year-old Alex Joseph Swanson, pulled out into traffic on Fair Oaks Boulevard near Carmichael Park around 3 a.m. Monday, "nearly causing an accident with another vehicle," the crime log states.

The nearby officers conducted a traffic stop and found that Swanson was driving with a shaved key in the ignition and had a backpack full of burglary tools, according to the crime log.

"A check of the registered owner revealed the vehicle was an unreported stolen vehicle," the crime log says.

Swanson was arrested and is currently being held in the Sacramento County Main Jail on felony charges of vehicle theft and receiving a stolen motor vehicle, as well as a misdemeanor charge of possessing burglar's tools. His bail is set at $50,000.
