Two candidates for the state Assembly District representing Carmichael have received the endorsement of The Sacramento Bee.
The Bee endorsed Peter Tateishi, the Republican chief of staff to U.S. Rep. (R-Gold River) and Rancho Cordova City Councilman Ken Cooley, a Democrat.
The two are running for the reconfigured state Assembly District 8 seat, which covers eastern Sacramento County, including Carmichael, Citrus Heights, Rancho Cordova and Arden Arcade.
Their opponent is Republican Barbara Ortega, a small business woman and former lobbyist.
Under the new open primary rules, voters on June 5 can vote for any candidate regardless of party, with the top two vote-getters competing in the general election in November, again regardless of party, The Bee reported.
"While Ortega knows her way around the Capitol, Tateishi has a stronger grounding in the district. He was born, raised and educated in District 8," The Bee editorial staff wrote about the alum and "He also knows local leaders and, as a of the , he worked successfully to expand park and recreation services for the district."
