Ground Breaks on Village Streetscape Project Sept. 18

The controversial project begins construction in less than a week.

Sacramento County District 3 representative Susan Peters and the Department of Transportation would like to invite Fair Oaks residents to Plaza Park for the Village Streetscape project ground-breaking ceremony, Sept. 18.

According to SACDOT spokesman Dan Regan, the project includes a number of improvements:

  • New sidewalks and walkways
  • New parking spaces
  • New mid-block crosswalk
  • Decorative street lights
  • Improved bicycle access
  • Corner improvements to make street crossings for pedestrians shorter, easier and more accessible
  • Repair of failed street pavement
  • Installation of landscaping in new planter areas
  • Restriping of the road for improved traffic safety

Regan explained completion of the project will take as long as a year — possibly longer — but improvements could start to be seen as soon as the end of 2012.

The joint project originally initiated in conjunction with the Fair Oaks Village Enhancement committee has had mixed reception from residents and local business owners. While many see the benefit of the improvements, some Village business owners fear the work and certain improvements could have an adverse affect on continued business.

The groundbreaking is scheduled to commence at 10:30 a.m. in Plaza Park at the corner of Park Drive and Fair Oaks Boulevard.
