Other facts

The San Juan Unified School District and public education has been my life's work. I have spent my 40 year career working to provide high quality education for the students and families of the San Juan District. I was a classroom teacher at Cambridge Heights, Howe Avenue, Sunrise Year Round School, and Trajan Elementary Schools. I was a principal at Littlejohn, Northridge, and Ottomon Elementary Schools. As a Director of Schools and Programs, I was responsible for twenty-one schools and numerous programs, including the nationally recognized BTSA/PAR program. Since my retirement, I have volunteered in classrooms and schools. I have served as a mentor for students. I was appointed and serve on the Board appointed Curriculum and Standards Committee. I also coach new principals and the facilitators of an equity and diversity program which I wrote. My son attended San Juan schools from kindergarten through graduation from high school. He is now a teacher/literacy coach at Kingswood K-8 School in the San Juan District. San Juan has always had a powerful focus on student learning with outstanding teachers, principals, and classified employees supporting students. In recent years, the district staff has built on this strength with a literacy focus, 21st Century teaching and learning skills, and ways to make instruction innovative and engaging for students. San Juan has continued to provide arts programs when other districts have cut them. Early Childhood Education is an important part of our district culture. As a member of the Board of Education, I want to make certain that funding is available to continue our valuable educational programs and to keep taxpayer's valuable dollars where they belong, in the classroom and educating our children.
