'Stay the Hell Away From Carmichael'?

"I've been witness to more hit-and-run (and even hit-and-flee-the-vehicle) accidents there than any place I've ever lived or worked."

The following was posted on the website, Reddit, this weekend by a person who will soon move to the Sacramento area. The title is "Moving to Sacramento:

"I wanted to ask about affordable places to live within a 30 minute commute to Roseville that aren't total dumps. Ideally I'd like a rural/suburban area. Thoughts?"

Of the 78 replies (as of Monday morning), one comment thread is worth highlighting for Carmichael residents: "... all I have to say is STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM CARMICHAEL," wrote Redditor gadorp.

When another user asks why, the anti-Carmichael poster elaborates. We've posted the explanation below. Let us know what you think of it in the comments:

Carmichael is almost entirely unwalkable (they're working on it, but seemingly only for the "main street" part of Fair Oaks Blvd) Just about every store front in the area seems to become a motel for the homeless and/or extremely loud tweakers after dark. Break-ins (car, apartment and house) are incredibly frequent. I've been witness to more hit-and-run (and even hit-and-flee-the-vehicle) accidents there than any place I've ever lived or worked.

There's some nice stuff to do there once in a while, the farmer's market's ok. It's not the worst place I've ever lived, but in the Sacramento area it's the worst in which I've spent any length of time.

Does the commenter have a point, or do you disagree? Let us know below.

A pessimistic person can complain about anything. Carmichael is a good, safe place to live. There are other areas in the region that have MUCH higher crime rates. Anywhere you move in Suburbia it is difficult to walk places... Fair Oaks, Citrus Heights, Roseville, Folsom are all the same when it comes to walking. Adam Corolla, who used to have a morning talk show on 106.5, has a segment called, "What can't Adam complain about?" People would call in and think about something so great there would be no way Adam could complain about it... But he always did. The person who wrote that reminds me of Adam being funny.

Well it certainly isn't the worst....has this guy ever been to Del Paso Heights or West Sac? I do see some valid complaints but research and town comparisons cited would have been helpful (although I do realize it was more of asking for an opinion). Also, I noticed that the relocator was asking for a suggestion on a rural/suburban area and I don't think carmichael fits that description anyway.

Carmichael use to be a good area. There are still certain areas such as Cameron Ranch and Barrett Hill, etc. But the world has changed and not for the better. Unfortunately no matter where you live now you have to be careful and it is a damn shame but that is the reality of our world today.

There is a "wrong part" to almost anywhere, even is big $$ El Dorado Hills. I guess my quetion is what is the quality and price range that you are looking for? I peronally love the Fair Oak/Folsom area but there is very different quality of life in any community. Good luck if you are headed downtown as you are moving in the wrong direction.

The "Los Angeles syndrome" is slowly but surely transforming parts of Sac Country.

It seems that there is always someone that wants to complain about something. My suggestion is, if there is so much to complain about in Carmichael.. then pick some other COZY place to live like DPH... or West or South Sac. I am sure that the complainer could be very happy there and we certainly won't miss him/her in our area.

Does this complainer realize how big carmichael is? It's not a sleepy little community, like when first built. I grew up in carmichael & am raising my kids in carmichael. it's still a great area to raise kids, know your neighbors, walk to the store or park, etc. some people complain about anything & everything!!

Please don't dis Carmichael or West Sac. Having lived in both communities, I can say they, like other area cities and towns, have their good neighborhoods and their not so good ones. Carmichael may not be walkable now but pardon the dust as it improves. As for West Sac, its development in Southport, by Raley Field and in the north area near IKEA, are providing jobs and keeping tax dollars in the city. And both have great mayors- elected or otherwise.

I have friends that bought their first house in Carmichael. It was fine when they were young and single. But now that they are raising kids the reality of the area via the quality and options of public schools is horrifying. Carmichael became no-mans land when the cross-town 50/80 freeway got killed. Now its just a big skanky culdesac.
