'Stay the Hell Away From Carmichael'?

"I've been witness to more hit-and-run (and even hit-and-flee-the-vehicle) accidents there than any place I've ever lived or worked."

The following was posted on the website, Reddit, this weekend by a person who will soon move to the Sacramento area. The title is "Moving to Sacramento:

"I wanted to ask about affordable places to live within a 30 minute commute to Roseville that aren't total dumps. Ideally I'd like a rural/suburban area. Thoughts?"

Of the 78 replies (as of Monday morning), one comment thread is worth highlighting for Carmichael residents: "... all I have to say is STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM CARMICHAEL," wrote Redditor gadorp.

When another user asks why, the anti-Carmichael poster elaborates. We've posted the explanation below. Let us know what you think of it in the comments:

Carmichael is almost entirely unwalkable (they're working on it, but seemingly only for the "main street" part of Fair Oaks Blvd) Just about every store front in the area seems to become a motel for the homeless and/or extremely loud tweakers after dark. Break-ins (car, apartment and house) are incredibly frequent. I've been witness to more hit-and-run (and even hit-and-flee-the-vehicle) accidents there than any place I've ever lived or worked.

There's some nice stuff to do there once in a while, the farmer's market's ok. It's not the worst place I've ever lived, but in the Sacramento area it's the worst in which I've spent any length of time.

I, too, miss the history quiz of a mystery location. Please bring it back.

I am curious as to why it is vacant and fenced off.

*gasp!!* Tacky chain link fence? There go the property values! Chain link fence aroundRead More vacant/undeveloped land is usually an indicator of some County ordinance to secure the land for public safety. I'd buy the land and for the pure entertainment factor put mock working oil pump jacks on the land. Just to see what people do. :-p

Thanks for the kind words Josh and for doing a good job of taking over Carmichael among other PatchRead More towns. I'll always remember promoting Patch around the area and the weird looks we/you got out at the multi-chamber mixer. Best of luck in Alaska and say hi to the eskimos for me.
