What to Know Before you Vote: Reminders and Tips

Sacramento County Elections Office tips for voters in Carmichael and elsewhere in the area.

California's primary election is Tuesday, and voters in Carmichael will be able to weigh in on a , a state term-limit reduction, and the offices of superior court judge, , U.S. Senate and .

But before heading to the polls, here are some tips from Sacramento County Registrar of Voters Jill LaVine to make the experience go as smoothly as possible:

Getting there:

The voting process:

  • Officials encourage voters to mark their sample ballots before leaving home.
  • Voting materials and help are available in English, Spanish and Chinese.
  • A new ballot can be provided if you make a mistake.
  • If your name doesn't appear on the list at your polling place, you can ask to vote by provisional ballot. "The provisional ballot will be counted after the elections office has confirmed that you are registered to vote and you did not already vote elsewhere in the election," the county states in a press release.
  • You can vote by provisional ballot at any polling place in the county, or at the county elections office at 7000 65th St. in Sacramento.

If you're voting at the last minute:

  • Vote-by-mail ballots must be dropped off by 8 p.m. on voting day; postmarks don't count. They can be turned in at any polling place in the county or at the county elections office, 7000 65th St. in Sacramento.
  • If you're still in line at 8 p.m. when your polling place closes, you will still be allowed to cast your vote.
