Who's Running for San Juan Unified Board of Education?

Six candidates have filed for three available seats.

Fair Oaks voters will decide among three sitting San Juan Unified School Board of Education members and five challengers in the Nov. 6 board election.

Only one incumbent from the board will seek reelection. Lucinda Luttgen has filed while Richard Launey and Larry Miles missed the Aug. 10 filing deadline, said Brad Buyse, campaign manager at the Sacramento County Elections office.

Six candidates will be vying for three board of education seats in the November election.

  • John Hawes: Hawes obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and Russian area studies in 1981 from the University of California, Santa Barbara and a Master of International Management (MIM) degree in 1982 from the American Graduate School of International Management in Glendale, Arizona. He has taught graduate and undergraduate college courses for more than 20 years and has operated a business consulting company since 1996. Hawes has two children that grew up in San Juan Unified, graduating from El Camino High School.
  • Pam Costa: According to her Sacramento County Voter Office and Elections ballot description, Costa is a retired teacher and principal.
  • Saul Hernandez: A small business owner for more than 20 years, Hernandez has served on a number of San Juan Unified School District committees. He served as the acting president for the Del Campo High School Booster Club before stepping down to focus on his current campaign. He has also served on the Finance, Transportation, and Facilities Committee, Measure J Oversight Committee; 3280 School Closure Committee and the Superintendent Selection Advisory Council.
  • Mark Lennon: According to his Sacramento County Voter Office and Elections ballot description, Lennon is active in the veteran's administration and is a father. After receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from UC San Diego, and Master’s Degree in Public Policy from the London School of Economics, he was commissioned as a US Naval Intelligence Officer in 1997 and was deployed overseas in support of operations in East Asia, where he was a Japanese linguist and intelligence analyst. He has served on the Curriculum and Standards advisory committee for the San Juan School Board and is an appointed member to the Pacific Council on International Policy.
  • Michael McKibbin: According to his Sacramento County Voter Office and Elections ballot description, McKibbin is a retired educator and parent. McKibbin has worked as a parent volunteer in the classrooms of San Juan District for the past eight years tutoring, teaching the school’s anti-bullying curriculum and assisting on field trips. He has participated on school site councils, served six years on the district’s Curriculum and Instruction Committee and more recently on the Strategic Planning team.
  • Lucinda Luttgen: According to her current San Juan Unified Board of Education profile, Luttgen began teaching in the San Juan Unified School District in 1967 and taught at several schools, including her alma mater San Juan High School, until her retirement in June of 2004. Luttgen has been active in professional development and continuing education activities for teachers, including involvement at California State University, Sacramento and working with the Science Olympiad, San Juan Teachers Association, and the Sierra Club.
