Churchill Student Seeks Donations for DC Trip

Rashel Jacobo selected for Junior National Young Leaders Conference.

By Victor Calderon

A student is seeking community donations to pay for a trip to the Junior National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, DC.

Rashel Jacobo, 11, was selected by the Congressional Youth Leadership Council to attend the conference this summer after she was nominated by her teacher Krista Filger.

Tuition for the event is $1,950, not including airfare, which is about $1,100, said John Hoffman, who is coordinating fundraising efforts for Rashel, who is in the sixth grade.

"I would like to attend this conference because it will teach me to be a good leader and inspire me to do great things," Jacobo wrote in a letter, adding that her goal is to become a doctor. "This is an opportunity of a lifetime for me."

Jacobo's mother Lucia "Lucy" Gomez works at New World Cleaners on Arden Way and Rashel's father holds jobs at two , one of which is in Carmichael at the 'Y', Hoffman said.

"I welcome and appreciate any and all assistance in supporting this young lady to experience this wonderful opportunity," he said.

Donations may be sent to:

The hard work of this young lady has earned her an invitation to join an elite group of outstanding young people from across the country. I ask anyone interested in more information regarding the event to visit http://www.cylc.org/index_about.cfm. I would appreciate any and all donations and/or suggestions to help her reach this goal. Thank you, Victor, Carmichael Patch and readers! We've made the initial $350 payment and are approaching $800 for the first installment. The second and last installment for tuition is also $800 and the deadline is May 27. Additionally, airfare is ~$1100 so that is another goal. If any readers have earned Southwest tickets that may expire soon, airline miles with another carrier, that would go a long way toward helping this worthy young student. Thank You!!! John

Just wanted to post an update regarding our fundraising goal: the $800 installment due May 11 was paid, and we are working to achieve the last installment of $800 due May 27. Many thanks to Carmichael Business Leaders, residents and Carmichael Patch!

To all that have helped (and even been concerned), I'm happy to share that as of last Friday we met our goal to cover Rashel’s tuition and her airfare. We are still hoping that some pledges will be met to allow her to get a few mementos & memorabilia. Thank you Victor and Carmichael Patch for allowing me to share the achievement and reward that Rashel has earned.
