Hard-Fought Win Earns Del Campo Sixth Capital Valley Conference Championship (VIDEO)

Tough-as-nails running and defense were keys to another championship victory for the Cougars.

After four lead changes and a handful of turnovers, Del Campo High School emerged victorious against Rio Linda High School to take home its sixth Capital Valley Conference championship, winning 34-28 on Friday.

The game was hard-fought and not without its mistakes from both teams. Del Campo committed two first-half turnovers, leading to Rio Linda touchdowns. And the Knights would fumble as well, leading to a Cougars touchdown as well.

The Cougars led 28-21 at halftime when senior quarterback Derek Rodigo rolled out wide to his left, throwing a near-perfect pass across his body to find senior wideout Adrian Rocha in the end zone. Rocha would have two game-defining moments in the game, helping solidify the Cougars win.

However, the Knights weren't about to go down without a fight. Coming back from the halftime intermission, the Knights recaptured some momentum on a touchdown with 5:00 to go in the third, tying the game 28-28.

Del Campo would take the lead for good when Chris Gonzales ran for a touchdown with 10:00 to go in the fourth quarter, but a failed extra point attempt would keep things interesting for both sides.

With only minutes left in the game, the Knights would threaten into Cougars territory on two occasions. However, it was a last-minute interception made by Rocha that would solidify the Cougars victory, bringing the team its sixth championship title.

For Cougars head coach Mike Dimino, it's the sixth championship in his 10-year career with the team.

Junior running back Austin Brown played well for Del Campo in the victory, scoring three rushing touchdowns. He has now scored 16 touchdowns on the season, according to MaxPreps.com.

Last season's game between the teams resulted in a 41-0 win for the Fair Oaks school.

The loss comes after last week's Rio Linda victory, defeating Roseville's Oakmont High, 55-28.
