New John Barrett Middle School Principal is Del Campo Grad

Brent Givens will be the new principal of the middle school in Carmichael, effective Aug. 5.

The next principal of a Carmichael middle school is the product of the San Juan Unified School District.

Del Campo High School alumnus Brent Givens will take over this fall as the principal of John Barrett Middle School, the district announced.

Givens will take the place of current John Barrett Principal Lisa Herstrom Smith, who is retiring this year.

Here's the district's full announcement of his new job:

Del Campo High School alumnus Brent Givens is returning home to San Juan Unified, bringing his 14 years of middle school leadership to serve as the next principal of John Barrett Middle School. 

His assignment is effective Aug. 5 when he’ll take over for retiring Principal Lisa Herstrom Smith.

Givens has served as the principal at Norwood Junior High School in the Twin Rivers Unified School District since 2010. Prior to that, he was the schools vice-principal and held a number of positions supporting summer school and technology projects at the district level. He began his career as a social studies teacher in 1999 at Nevada’s Clark County School District. 

He graduated from the University of Nevada at Las Vegas (UNLV) in 1999 with his Bachelors of Science degree in secondary education focused on social science. He also earned his Masters in Education with a focus on curricular studies and technology leadership from UNLV.
