Carmichael Resident Takes Camellia Cup

At 87, George Koch of Carmichael wins 47th Folsom Lake sailing race.

Carmichael's own George Koch, 87, won the 47th Camellia Cup on Folsom Lake Sunday.

Koch won the running of the regatta sailing his J22, Poco A Poco.

The win was Koch’s second -- he won the first time in 2006.

In a press release, the retired dentist admitted there weren't as many boats competing in 2013 compared to 30 years ago.

Still, “Victory is very," he said. "Very satisfying.”

The annual race is hosted by the Folsom Lake Yacht Club.

Koch said in the statement that he didn't think he'd win. But his overall stewardship likely beat out the boats in two smaller classes who were winning all their races, club officials said.

In Koch’s case, he and his crew (midman/tactician Robert Koch and bowman Scott Frederickson) won it in keeping with his boat’s name, little by little, taking two firsts and two seconds in the eight-boat open keel class, the release pointed out.

Steve Aguilar, also from Carmichael, competed in the Open Centerboard class aboard a Laser.

Winning the eight-boat Banshee class and Open Centerboard Perpetual Trophy was Charles Witcher of Sacramento.

The top of seven Catalina 22 skippers was Roseville’s Don Hare on “No Cat Hare.”  Last year’s Camellia Cup Champion, Mark Erdrich of Elk Grove, could not repeat on Fusion, despite not losing a race in the five-boat Santana 20 class.

Established in 1957 the yacht club is located at Brown’s Ravine on Folsom Lake (Green Valley Road).  It conducts sailboat racing, cruises and social events.
