Former Carmichael Pool Will be Grassy Field by June

The Carmichael Park Pool is being replaced by grass, as the district's foundation explores whether a new pool could be built.

The former pool at Carmichael Park is now just a memory, but it won't be replaced with anything functional for a couple more months.

"The demolition is done now, [but] it will be June by the time people will be able to get on the grass and play on it," Carmichael Recreation and Park District Recreation Services Manager Tracy Kerth said this week.

The pool, which stood since the 1950s but was leaky and not up to code, was torn out and will be replaced with a grassy area usable for soccer or other activities.

She said district staff watched the pool and adjoining building being demolished, and that it was interesting but heart-wrenching.

"I ran the pool for 17 years," Kerth said. "It was a funky little pool but we had a great time."

The removal of the pool, which hadn't been used in almost a decade, leaves the district without a place of its own for aquatic activities. Kerth said staff get questions about swim lessons and other activities, and usually point residents toward one of the other nearby park districts.

Could the district build another pool in the future? Kerth said the district's foundation is looking into the idea, but will face hurdles.

"It's funding mostly," she said. "That's part of the research–how can we fund this project?"

A previous report by a district said replacing the Carmichael Park Pool could cost anywhere from $2.5 million to $6 million.
