NBA Owners Reject Bid to Move Sacramento Kings to Seattle

The NBA Board of Governors voted Wednesday to reject a proposal to sell the Sacramento Kings to a group in Seattle and move the team there.

The 30 NBA team owners gave a clear message today at a meeting in Dallas: The Sacramento Kings will not be allowed to move to Seattle.

The owners voted 22-8 to reject a bid to move the Kings to Seattle; a Seattle group led by hedge fund manager Chris Hansen and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer sought to purchase the team and had even upped its bid in recent days. The vote was reported by numerous media outlets including ESPN and the New York Times.

Seattle and Sacramento, which had both been focused on trying to snag the team for next season, now turn their focus in different directions: Seattle fans can hope for an expansion team, which a senior NBA official said may be a possibility, while Sacramento investors hoping to buy the Kings from the Maloofs will try to hammer out a deal.
