The American River: Good For White-Water Rafting?

Popular Mechanics magazine highlighted five spots for white-water rafting in the U.S. and The American River made the list.

The American River was again featured on a recreation best-of list. This time it was included in a Popular Mechanic's magazine article highlighting five white-water rafting rivers in the U.S.

Just last month it was also included in a list of top urban bike trails in the country from a USA Today article.

The list included "some of the best U.S. rivers for a rapids adventures" and included the Colorado River near the Grand Canyon, Salmon River in Idaho, Chattooga River in Georgia and South Carolina and Youghiogheny River in Pennsylvania.

Here's what they had to say about The American River:

This river is located in the oak-studded Sierra Nevada foothills. The South Fork of the American River, which flows into the Sacramento River, is a great section for beginners. For a bit more topsy-turvy action, the Middle Fork boasts a mix of Class III and Class IV rapids. It's set in a canyon 2000 feet deep and is surrounded by numerous historic sites from the gold rush era.
