Officials Tout Firework Safety Precautions Region Wide

Fire officials across the region agree residents can have a safe 4th of July holiday by following some basic firework-use safety rules. 

First and foremost, safe and legal fireworks are those that have the California fire marshal's seal, area officials reiterate.  

Illegal fireworks that cause the most dangers and damage include firecrackers, sky rockets, bottle rockets, aerial shells, roman candles and modified "safe and sane" fireworks, according toConsumnes Fire Department officials. 

Of important note, some areas in the Sacramento Valley, like Davis, do not allow the use of fireworks legal elsewhere in California. 

And fines for illegal firework use can be steep. In Elk Grove, those caught using illegal fireworks could face up to 10 days in jail and/or up to $1000 in fines, report Consumnes fire officials. 

Basic firework safety measures include: 

•Never light fireworks in bottles or cans, cut or take fireworks apart or add ingredients to fireworks.

• Do not re-light, alter or fix any “dud” firework item, like those that fizzle. 

• Always have an adult present.

• Use fireworks outdoors only.

• Use fireworks in areas with hard surfaces.

• Have a bucket of water and garden hose on-hand to store extinguished fireworks. It is recommended to let fireworks soak in the bucket of water at least overnight.

• Do not drink alcohol while using fireworks.

• Keep a close watch on children and pets.

• Remember, sparklers reach a temperature of 1200° F and can cause serious burns.

• If any burn occurs, treat with cool water and seek medical attention.

• Light one firework at a time, and then move away to a safe distance. Never carry fireworks in your pockets.

• Only light fireworks outdoors in a clear area away from anything that may catch fire.

Because of the immediate dangers presented by illegal fireworks, area jurisdictions advise witnesses to call local authorities by dialing 9-1-1.
