300 Volunteers To Clean Up Effie Yeaw

Mormon church volunteers will join others to repair nature center.

A group of 300 Mormon church volunteers will help to clean up the on Saturday.

Two years ago, the Carmichael center inside was in danger of closure due to Sacramento County budget cuts, church officials said. A small nonprofit organization, the , was asked by Sacramento County to manage the nature center and keep it open to the public.

With a budget of just half of what it was previously, ARNHA continues Effie Yeaw’s mission of connecting Sacramento-area families with nature, serving 100,000 visitors and providing educational programs for 20,000 elementary school children every year.
 
Effie Yeaw relies on hundreds of volunteers to help maintain the nature preserve and run programs, and on Saturday, in one of the largest single-day volunteer efforts ever at Effie Yeaw, 300 Mormon Helping Hands workers from Carmichael and Fair Oaks will converge on the nature center and preserve to accomplish more than a dozen projects, including:
 
-Building a new roof for Effie Yeaw’s aviary
-Creating a children’s playground out of fallen tree limbs and stumps
-Repairing stairs at the nature center’s main building
-Removing barbed wire fencing
-Clearing out plant growth from a pond to restore the ecosystem
-Removing thistle and other non-native plants…
                        
and , along with representatives with ARNHA and the , are holding a press conference Saturday to thank the volunteers, encourage residents throughout the county and region to provide similar meaningful service as a way to relieve the burden on local governments, and let the public know that Effie Yeaw Nature Center is still open to the public.
