Carmichael Relay For Life Fundraiser Canceled

Officials credit low participation.

The Carmichael Relay For Life fundraiser for cancer research has been canceled due to low participation, organizers have announced.

The event is a 24-hour gathering where teams of people camp out and take turns walking or running around a track or path to raise money for cancer research.

This year's event was scheduled to take place Aug. 4-5 at .

"For the last 28 years, the American Cancer Society has been cultivating and developing communities to fight back against cancer through our signature activity, Relay For Life," Amy Jones, a senior Relay manager, wrote in an emailed statement. "We have learned so much though our endeavors. Sometimes, we learn that it might be time to take an indefinite pause in a community, and this letter brings news that we have made the difficult decision to sunset the Relay For Life of Carmichael for the time being, due to a low number of event participants."

The email also mentions that funds raised and registrations for this year's Relay in Carmichael can be transferred to the Fair Oaks Relay on Aug. 11-12 at . Participants also have the option of leaving the funds as a donation to the cancer society.
