The Fair Oaks Water District started off as the Fair Oaks Irrigation District in the early 20th century, and had only a handful of customers. That number has since grown to about 40,000.

The district's building is reminiscent of a Spanish mission, with a very tidy lobby and a receptionist sitting behind a window. The company is owned by the citizens of Fair Oaks and is run by a group of five board members. The water is purchased from the San Juan Water District, and undergoes a rigorous purification process.

The Fair Oaks Water District also participates in community events, such as the Fair Oaks Chicken Festival, and holds an annual poster calendar contest.
