San Juan Unified School District Special Education Director

The San Juan Unified School District is a single-district special education local plan area. The district employsMore more than 280 special education teachers and specialists and more than 290 instructional assistants and classified staff. Special education programs and services are provided at each of the 80 schools in the district. 

Special education teachers are included and valued as members of the teaching/learning community. For specialized teachers and students, San Juan maintains a rich instructional media center, a library of special education materials reserved for special education staff. Materials are reviewed, selected and purchased by teacher committees.

San Juan school principals receive training in special education. In addition, the district employs 11 program specialists, two program managers and one special education director to coordinate the program.

San Juan maintains traditional special day class and resource specialist programs. In addition, San Juan has cultivated preschool centers, inclusion sites and specialized cluster programs to serve students with low-incidence disabilities. 

 John Saylor is the district's director of special education.

San Juan Central Enrollment and Family Resource Center

 San Juan Central, located at the former site of Garfield Elementary School, is an enrollment and familyMore resource center for the San Juan Unified School District.

 San Juan Central was created as a one-stop resource to service families seeking resources and information when enrolling their children in the district.  Families are able to enroll students, submit transfer and open enrollment applications, have questions answered, receive pre-testing services and benefit from the on-site immunization clinic.

 As of June 2009, school sites discontinued enrollments and all families are required to come complete enrollments at San Juan Central. 

El Sereno High School Independent Study

Bella Vista High School

Established in 1960, Bella Vista High School would be the first of two high schools built in Fair Oaks, California.More Part of the San Juan Unified School District, Bella Vista is centrally located in Fair Oaks. In 2003, Bella Vista was the only high school in Sacramento to win the California Department of Education's School Recognition Award as a California Distinguished School. It received the same award in 2009.

Bella Vista offers special business courses in advanced computer applications, which upon completion, provide students with three units toward their education at California State University, Sacramento. The high school's academic decathlon team has represented Sacramento County in the California Academic Decathlon for the past 19 years.

Del Campo High School

Del Campo is one of two public high schools in Fair Oaks. Like its counterpart, Bella Vista High School, Del Campo isMore part of the San Juan Unified School District. The high school resides on the Western edge of Fair Oaks and is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. It has increased its Academic Performance Index by a total of 56 points during a three-year period.

Del Campo's block schedule, or "4X4," is conceived to give its students flexible academic elective scheduling, emphasizing exploration and advancement in the arts. Students are also encouraged to take an active role in their community through a number of different extracurricular and athletic programs.

Orangevale Open K-8 School

Orangevale Open accepts student admissions from across the San Juan Unified School district through its OpenMore Classroom Program. According to the school's handbook, the Open Classroom emphasis differs little from presently-taught traditional school programs. The programs requires parents to sign an agreement to participate in and support the philosophy and elements of the open program.  This includes mandatory attendance at monthly night meetings.

The school describes its curriculum as social, emotional, intellectual and physical. The school believes cooperation between the teachers and the students' parents is also integral in developing the foundation for education.
